- Willie Shoemaker was born a month
- earlier than he was supposed to, and
- weighed only two-and-a-half pounds at
- birth. This was in the days before
- hospitals had special equipment to help
- premature and underweight babies. In
- fact, most babies were born at home.
- The doctor told WillieΓÇÖs parents that he
- doubted the baby would live through his
- first night. But WillieΓÇÖs grandmother
- wrapped the baby in blankets and put
- him on the oven door to keep him warm.
- Miraculously, Willie survived the night
- -- and grew up to become a great
- sports champion.
