  1. Willie Shoemaker was born a month
  2. earlier than he was supposed to, and
  3. weighed only two-and-a-half pounds at
  4. birth. This was in the days before
  5. hospitals had special equipment to help
  6. premature and underweight babies. In
  7. fact, most babies were born at home.
  8. The doctor told WillieΓÇÖs parents that he
  9. doubted the baby would live through his
  10. first night. But WillieΓÇÖs grandmother
  11. wrapped the baby in blankets and put
  12. him on the oven door to keep him warm.
  13. Miraculously, Willie survived the night
  14. -- and grew up to become a great
  15. sports champion.
